Vancouver FC season draws to a close

Buoyed by a four-game undefeated run in their league and a strong performance against the Whitecaps, Vancouver FC is preparing to wrap up the season with their last road trip and final home game.
Eagles will make a trip to Ottawa for the final away game of the season on Sunday before the season finale vs. Calvary at home on Oct. 18.
While they are eliminated from CPL playoff contention, Vancouver FC made history this season, becoming the first Canadian Premier League team to reach the Canadian Championship final, where they made the Whitecaps work for their 4-2 win.
On Wednesday, interviewed following a team practice at Langley’s Yorkson Park, VFC team captain and goalkeeper Callum Irving was proud of his team’s effort in the loss, particularly after they fell behind 2-0 within the game’s opening 10 minutes.
“It could’ve been really easy to completely break down, but I think the mentality that we showed is something we can be proud of,” said Irving.
Goals from Thierno Bah and Nicolas Mezquida gave the Whitecaps a closer game than many expected.
At the practice, midfielder Thomas Powell, a former Trinity Western University standout, told the Langley Advance Times Vancouver FC’s performance shouldn’t be overlooked, despite the loss.
“Scoring two goals against (the Whitecaps) is massive. We showed we were capable of competing against one of the best teams in North America,” said Powell.
In CPL action, Vancouver FC is undefeated in their last four games. Now, the side hopes to continue this run to end the season.
They have two wins and two draws since Sept. 13, including a 1-1 draw with league leaders Forge FC.
Irving said the team should be motivated to play whether they’re in the playoffs or not.
“We should be trying to make everyone around VFC proud. That should be enough motivation to keep going,” said Irving.
Powell said the team still has a lot to play for with a chance to put a stain on the rest of the league.
“We can be spoilers for other teams. You got Ottawa chasing first place. That’s our mentality right now. Just be spoilers,” said Powell.
Irving is the league leader in saves made (91), but he said he wishes he wasn’t.
“I’d rather not have to make a lot of saves,” said Irving, smiling.
“I try to organize as best as possible and limit chances, but a goalkeeper’s job is to save the ball and I’m trying to do that to the best of my ability.”
Irving said it hasn’t been the best season for him, but he and his defenders are playing with confidence to end the season.
“There’s a good synergy.”
